The Cultural Food Project was a gathering space we created in 2024 to celebrate the cultural foods we grow on the land together. Each session centred on a single plant, offering time to learn collectively through land cultivation, cooking, food preservation and mindful practices. We spent time exploring texts, recipes, folklore and traditional growing knowledge with a focus on engaging with land ecologies through anti-colonial and non-western perspectives. Sessions were free with Southwark residents prioritised.

Since then we have taken this project beyond the garden to spaces such as Somerset House, Decolonial Centre and Deptford Literature Festival. During these iterations we have collected communal scrolls, notes, paintings, collages and more which will culminate in a larger archiving project in the near future.

We’re continuing this project in evolving forms.

The first iteration, outside the garden, took place at Somerset House in April 2025 as part of the SOIL and Salt Cosmologies exhibition.

We collaborate with others to bring the project into public spaces and programming through reading groups, creative writing sessions and open discussions. We’re excited to support communities to take time to reflect on the significance of their stories and the impacts of food and herbs in their lives, culture and heritage.
